Winter Trip Prep

Here are the bits and pieces you will need in order to make the winter trip a successful one.

Our trip will be Feb 26-28th, 2015.

Here are the FIELD TRIP FORMS in case you have lost the originals.

On Nov 20th we will be talking about better ways of getting food and water into you.

Nov 28th. Here are detailed instructions for how to build a quinzee. In southern Canada these are the shelters of choice due to the type of snowpack we have. In the arctic regions igloos are the shelters of choice. This is because the snow they have can easily be cut into blocks using a snow knife (machete) or a saw.

There will be no classes next week (Dec 1st-5th)

Dec 10th
Here is the winter food assignment. The one where you are to make hot smoothies for your group. If every group had four people and each person made 1 recipe with 4 servings, there would be lots of hot smoothies to go round! Please make sure to do this as you will be much happier if you are fed and warm!

Dec 18th
Today's class will cover the basics of hypothermia. It is important to know the signs, symptoms, causes and solutions for hypothermia as a good trip can be quickly ruined by poor choices or a lack of attention!

Jan 8th
In today's class we will determine the food groups. We can also start to firm up the foods we will bring. (Dehydrate everything!!)  As far as the Quinzee groups are concerned, we will ideally build 3 quinzees. One for girls, to for boys.

We will also go over the CLOTHING SUGGESTIONS for the trip. ie: This is what you should be packing for the trip. Because you need to take more gear on a winter trip it would be a good idea to bring a sled to pull the stuff in. We will go over how to build/retrofit a proper sled and harness before the exam break.

Jan 9th
Today we will do a clothing simulation. I will show you how miserable or comfortable you can be as a result of making some good, or bad, decisions. Hint: Say NO to cotton!

Jan 15th
Today we are going to look at winterizing our camping habits.  Making sure our camps are set up properly as soon as we arrive will allow us to be comfortable and relaxed once it gets dark. Especially important in winter is that we do not leave any gear lying around anywhere. a light snowfall is all it takes to lose things!

Jan 22nd
Today we did a short tutorial on how to put on snowshoes. We will run a class in the first week of February after school where we get to wear the snowshoes and practice using them behind the school.

One of the joys of winter is snow. I have always been fascinated by the properties of snow, it has such strength and fragility. It can be so delicate and also so deadly. Today we will look at snowflakes and snow crystals (how they form, how they differ, and atmospheric displays).
Here is an example of a huge avalanche in Norway.
